About John Waterhouse (1849 - 1917)
Born in Italy and reared in Britain, John Waterhouse was the son of an artist
who embraced the Victorian era's pre-Raphaelite movement. Influenced by Alma-Tadema,
Leighton and other painters of the time, Waterhouse enjoyed popularity and success
during his lifetime. His Lady of Shalott was displayed at Britain's Royal Academy in 1888.
The artwork was inspired by the legend of Camelot and takes its title from the poetry of Tennyson.
Waterhouse's Mermaid dates to 1901 and hangs today in the Royal Academy.
